This is a root growing out of a 60 foot rock face in The Glen at the foot of Knock Na Rae in County Sligo. This was my encounter with the real Green Man back in late May. I must go back and see if I can make out what kind of foliage springs from the trunk about 60 feet above this root. The root seems to be entwined on it's way down and at the point that it departs from the rock face, moss and ferns have grown to create a kind of garland below which is formed a torso with an outstretched arm connecting to a walking stick and below the torso, these two legs, striding deeper into the Glen. but, it's actually all an exposed root before it plunges back into the earth, anchoring the form of Green Man in this exotic micro-climate. I'll have to wait for another lengthy and rare dry spell to revisit him as the floor of the glen is 60 feet below sea level and like a canyon is open to the elements. The day we went,we were still wading through muck. By now, it must be filled with several feet of water and green man submerged to his knees.

Sonraigh is an Irish word. This is how it translates in English:, "to particularize, specify, define, perceive, distinguish." But it is so much more... it is a translation that really needs to be lived. These are my gleanings with dim glass imprints, reflections, silhouettes, shadows, echoes and after-images from: "The thinking Point", "The Dreaming Point", and "The Turning Point" in "The Land of Heart's Desire" (With occasional monographs...)
