Making a difference
Just a reminder, Please Support the gas boycott September 11,12,13, 2005 please pass this message far and wide, it matters not who gets the credit as long as this effort is successful. To all We are trying to send a message to oil companies and with out the support of tens of millions of Americans it will go no where. We not only have to deal with higher and higher gas prices, if we do not act. In R.I. gas has increased in the past week at about $.12 per gallon per day.
Winter is not far off, and with the ever rising cost of fuel oil it is going to hit people like a speeding freight train that has lost its brakes.--- $3.00 .... $3.50 a gallon for heating oil....... maybe more.
We have sent letters ( see below ) to more than a dozen newspapers in R.I. and nearby Mass.
Come on concerned citizens / Reformers / Greens / Independents / Libertarians please support this effort. Please support / endorse The Rhode Island Reform and the many other individuals and organizations that are calling for a boycott of GAS Sept. 11, 12, 13.
No matter how much we disagree with each other on so many other issues THIS IS TO DAMM INPORTANT TO IGNORE. If we wait for our government to react we will be paying $5.00 a gallon for gas and $4.50 for heating oil.
Bill Greenwood - Chair R.I. Reform Party
Please circulate far and wide.
To The Editor;
The Rhode Island Reform Party supports the CALL for a NATIONWIDE BOYCOTT.
The Great American Gas Out Sept 11, 12, 13, remember the dates.
Something must be done to combat the escalating prices we pay at the pumps.
Lets see how many Canadian\ American people we can get to ban together for a three day period in
September, NOT TO BUY ANY GASOLINE, during those three days.
LET'S HAVE A GAS OUT. Do not buy any gasoline from September 11th, 2005 THROUGH September 13, 2005.
Buy what you need before the dates listed above, or after, but try not to buy any during the GAS OUT.
If you want to help, just send this to everyone you knowand ask them to do the same. We need to see if we,
the average American/Canadian consumer, can indeed make a difference.
Let¹s Make This a Success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks,
Write these dates down- Sept. 11th - 13th NO GAS!!!!!!
Bill Greenwood, Chair R.I. Reform Party

This is the text of an e-mail I received today from my local Green Party Secretary:
Hello, it is that time of year again, time to gear up for the annual Buy Nothing Day event. If your organization wants to sign on as a co sponsor, please get back to me. Also this year we are looking at the possibility of satellite sites. Spread the event around the state. If you are interested in helping organize a site outside of Providence on the 25th of November, please let me know that as well as we would be more than willing to help you understand what it takes to create the event.
Finally, if your organization is willing to collect coats for further distribution at the end of the day on the 25th, please get in touch so we can coordinate that effort as well. greg gerritt
BUY NOTHING DAY WINTER COAT EXCHANGE
If you have one to give, please drop it off. If you need a coat,
come pick one up.
Friday, November 25, 10 - 2pm
State House lawn (across from Providence Place Mall)
Rain/Snow site: St Patrick's School 244 Smith St.
THE IDEA: Buy Nothing Day was created by Adbusters, a group devoted to
exposing how advertising is promoting a culture and lifestyle that
are unhealthy for our communities and our planet. Adbusters came up with the
idea that on the biggest shopping day of the year, the day after
Thanksgiving, people should protest the consumerism that is eatingour
communities and overwhelming the life support systems of our planet.
This day is called Buy Nothing Day. This year participants in over 50
countries will opt not to spend any money for 24 hours.
LOCAL EVENT: As a positive, community affirming event on the 25th, we are
asking people to reflect on effects of consumerism to our planet and our
community. And we are asking people to donate a winter coat that they no
longer need to the Coat Exchange so that it can be given to a member of
ourcommunity who needs one. Last year we collected 1,000 coats, and all
coats that are not given away at the event are donated to centers that
distribute them. Coats can be dropped off at the site, and people who
need a coat can come by to pick one up. This is Providence's 9th Annual
Buy Nothing Day Coat Exchange.
THE ISSUES::
Buy Nothing Day exposes the environmental and ethical consequences of
consumerism. The developed countries - only 20% of the world population -
are consuming over 80% of the earth's natural resources, causing a
disproportionate level of environmental damage and unfair distribution of
wealth.
As consumers we need to question the products we buy
and challenge the companies who produce them. What are the true risks to
the environment and developing countries? The argument is broad and deep
- while it continues we should be looking for simple solutions - Buy
Nothing Day is a good place to start.
Of course, Buy Nothing Day isn't about changing your
lifestyle for just one day - we want it to be a lasting relationship -
maybe a life changing experience? We want people to make a commitment to
consuming less, recycling more and challenging companies to clean up and
be fair. The supermarket or shopping mall might offer choice, but this
shouldn't be at the cost of the environment or developing countries.
CO-SPONSORS: Every year we have over 50 co-sponsors: from community
organizations, places of worship, civic, environmental, and peace
groups. We are hapy to include your organization as one of th4e co sponsors.
